Wellesley Softball Splits vs. Wesleyan and Ramapo

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wellesley College softball team continued its spring break trip to the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla., with a split in a pair of extra innings games against Wesleyan and Ramapo. The Blue needed to come from behind in both games, defeating Wesleyan 5-4, but falling to Ramapo, 6-5.

Wellesley fell behind 3-0 to Wesleyan after the second, but added two runs each in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-3 lead. The Blue got big hits from Lauren Goldfarb, who launched an RBI double, and Mara Blesoff who drove in a run on a single in the third. In the fourth, Abby Casey recorded an RBI single, while Goldfarb grounded out to score Phoebe Walsh-Costello

Wesleyan got a run back in the seventh to tie the score at 4-4 and force extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Cardinals threatened with runners on second and third with only one out, but Goldfarb forced a ground ball and Mariah Philips, Jayne Ellis and Blesoff turned a 5-3-2 double play to end the inning. 

In the bottom of the eighth, Walsh-Costello was placed on second, and was advanced to third by Maria LaBouyer. Casey then singled into right field, scoring Walsh-Costello and giving Wellesley the 5-4 victory. 

Casey led the Blue, going 3-4 with a run and two RBI. Goldfarb added two hits and two RBI, while Kimberly Cabral contributed a pair of singles. Goldfarb moved to 2-0 on the season, throwing eight innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits. She struck out five and walked three. 

In the nightcap against Ramapo, Wellesley went up 1-0 on a leadoff double from Philips, who came around to score on a single from Goldfarb. Ramapo added runs in the bottom of the first and second, taking a 4-1 lead before Wellesley got one back in the third, as a Philips RBI single cut the lead to 4-2. 

Ramapo scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, opening a 5-2 advantage before the Blue rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to knot the game at 5-5. Wellesley capitalized on two Ramapo miscues and singles from Cabral and Casey to send the game to extra innings.

The Blue threatened in the top of the eighth with a runner at third, but couldn't push a run past the plate. Ramapo added a run in the bottom half of the inning to seal the 6-5 victory. 

Philips and Goldfarb each collected two hits in the loss, while Philips, Goldfarb and Casey each drove in runs. In the circle, Lindsay Johnson had a solid outing, collecting 12 total strikeouts. Overall, she threw seven and two-thirds of an inning, allowing six runs (only four earned) on nine hits.
