Softball Closes Spring Trip with Split Against Nationally-Ranked Teams

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Wellesley College softball team closed out its spring break trip to the National Training Center with a split against two nationally-ranked opponents. The Blue opened the day with a 4-3 win over #13 University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, but fell 3-2 in the nightcap to #25 St. Thomas of Minnesota.

Wellesley head back up north with a 4-6 overall record.

Against UW-Eau Claire, the Blue used a pair of two-run homeruns to account for their four runs. The Blugolds took a 3-0 advantage going into the bottom of the fourth inning, before Wellesley struck for four runs, and held them the rest of the way to seal the win.

Mara Blesoff led off the fourth inning with a double to left field, before Jayne Ellis' blast to right center scored pinch-runner Rachael Goldenberg, cutting the lead to 3-2. Kimberly Cabral then reached on an error, before Lindsay Johnson hit the first homerun of her career giving Wellesley a 4-3 lead.

Johnson then held on to the one-run lead, earning the victory in the circle. She threw all seven innings, scattered seven hits and allowed just three earned runs. Johnson struck out five and walked three in the win, her first of the season.

In game two of the day, Wellesley scored two runs in the top of the sixth, but couldn't complete the comeback in the loss to St. Thomas.

The Blue collected five hits in the game, led by a double from Maria LaBouyer and an RBI single from Ellis. Lauren Goldfarb, Mariah Philips and Johnson all added singles in the defeat.

Wellesley is back in action on Wednesday afternoon, traveling to local-rival Brandeis. The Blue will play a doubleheader with the Judges beginning at 3:00pm.
