WELLESLEY, Mass. – Junior Mara Blesoff hit a walk-off double in game one, while junior Sarah Schwartzmeyer fired a four-hit shutout in game two, as the Wellesley College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Rhode Island College on Wednesday afternoon.
Wellesley took game one, 5-4, and won the nightcap, 2-0, improving to 11-13 on the season. RIC dips to 11-8 overall.
In game one, the Blue took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Maria LaBouyer got things started with a solo shot to dead center, her third round-tripper of the season. Jayne Ellis and Kimberly Cabral followed with singles, with Ellis scoring on a throwing error. Cabral then scored on a single off the bat of Lindsay Johnson, accounting for the third Wellesley run.
RIC battled back, with three runs in the top of the fourth. Nicole Guggino led off with a single through the left side before Kristina Gingell reached on an infield hit. Justina Thoma then knotted the game at 3-3, with a three-run blast over the left field fence.
Wellesley put the game away in the bottom of the seventh with its second walk-off hit in as many games. Pinch hitter Mariah Philips led off the inning with an infield single. After a failed sacrifice bunt, LaBouyer singled through the right side to put runners on first and second with one out. Blesoff then drilled a pitch to the right center field fence, doubling home the game-tying and game-winning runs.
LaBouyer finished 2-3 with two runs, two hits and an RBI, while Blesoff was 2-4. Cabral was 2-2 with a walk. Goldfarb picked up the win for the Blue, throwing all seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits. She struck out four and walked one.
RIC was paced by Thoma's two hits, which included the three-run homerun. Kristina Gingell added two hits, while Porkora drove in the other run for the Anchorwomen. In the circle, Emily Johnson pitched the first three innings, allowing three runs on six hits before leaving with an injury. Jessica Borden was the pitcher of record, suffering the loss after throwing three innings and giving up two runs on four hits.
In game two, Wellesley scored solo runs in the bottom of the fourth and the fifth innings, and it was all the offense the team would need as Schwartzmeyer tossed her second shut out of the season. She threw all seven innings, allowing just four hits, while striking out eight and walking one.
The Blue got their first run in the bottom of the fourth, as singles from Philips and Elizabeth Murphy and a walk from Emilyrose Havrilla loaded the bases. Jennifer Migliore was then hit by a pitch, scoring Philips for the 1-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, Wellesley's Ellis recorded her third homerun of the season, a solo shot to center field, which put the Blue up, 2-0. Schwartzmeyer took care of the rest, recording three strikeouts over the next two innings to seal the victory.
Philips led the Blue at the plate with two hits, while five other Wellesley players added singles.
For RIC, Gingell picked up two hits to lead the offense. Borden pitched well, despite being saddled with the loss. She tossed six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.
Wellesley is back in action on Friday, hosting a key NEWMAC double-header against three time defending champion, Coast Guard at 3:00pm. The Anchorwomen return to Little East play on Saturday at 1:00pm, traveling to the University of Southern Maine for a 1:00pm doubleheader.
