MIT Downs Blue Softball

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT's bats struck early and often to give the Engineers (17-9 Overall, 7-5 NEWMAC) both halves of a NEWMAC doubleheader over Wellesley College softball on Saturday at Briggs Field.

Sophomore Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) pitched a complete game with six strikeouts in game one. 

First year Sarah Wicker (Ponte Vedra Beach, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Blue (13-17 Overall, 5-9 NEWMAC). She also struck out two in four innings in game one.

MIT supplied five runs and Langmeyer threw all seven innings to give the Engineers game one.

Wellesley tallied a run in the top of the first. First year Anisa Rodriguez (La Quinta, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Wicker.

The Engineers tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Senior Mackenzie Relihan (Naperville, Ill.) singled in a run with a shot to center field. MIT added two more runs in the third inning. A single to left from first year Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) plated a run. Later the team made it 3-1 with a sac fly from sophomore Kara Hines (Cynthiana, Ky.).

The Blue trimmed the deficit to one in the top half of the fifth. Wicker singled to left center, scoring senior Parker Phillips (River Forest, Ill.). 

MIT responded with two more in the bottom of the sixth. Relihan scored Hines on a sacrifice fly to right field. Later in the inning, first year Allie Chinchar (North Ridgeville, Ohio) came home on a grounder to shortstop.

Langmeyer closed her complete game with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh. The sophomore had a WHIP of 1.00 and allowed four base hits. First year Jillian Colgan (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched two innings of relief. 

Game 2 | MIT 11, Wellesley 3 | Final (5 Innings)

MIT's bats came alive with 11 runs on 11 hits in game two. 

The offense began early for the Engineers. Junior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.) blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. Cable drove in another run in the second on a single to center field. 

MIT added seven more runs in the bottom of the second to go up 10-0 after two innings. Highlights included a three-run triple from junior Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, Calif.), a two-run double down the right field line from Hines, and a single from Relihan that brought home a run.

Senior Katia Pendowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) made it 11 unanswered runs in the fourth with an RBI single to center.

Wellesley put up three runs in the top of the fifth inning. An error on a fielder's choice allowed first year Alena Mulhern (Kingston, Mass.) to advance home. Another error later in the innings scored a pair of runs. First year Emily Kulhanek (Newbury Park, Calif.) and senior Emma Slibeck (New York, N.Y.) came home on the play. MIT recorded the final out of the fifth up eight runs to end the game.

Sophomore Nicole Doering (St. Louis Park, Minn.) threw five innings with two strikeouts for MIT. Slibeck recorded a punch out in 2.1 innings of relief for Wellesley.

Both teams will host NEWMAC opponents at 3 & 5 PM on Friday, April 26. Wellesley welcomes Smith. MIT will host Emerson.
