Blue Move to 6-1 with Win Over Coast Guard

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley basketball celebrated Student-Athlete Appreciation Night with a 60-39 win over Coast Guard Tuesday evening at Keohane Sports Center.  The win lifts the Blue to 6-1 overall, 3-0 in the NEWMAC.  The Bears fall to 2-6, 0-3 in the conference.

In route to the win, the Blue used two surges -- a 10-0 spurt in the first period and a 17-2 run in the second -- to put the game out of reach, while racking up 23 points off turnovers compared to the Bears' four.  The Blue also held Coast Guard to just 24% from the field.

The squads battled to a 18-18 tie midway through the first period, with Coast Guard relying on Larla Brown for points and Wellesley depending on Becca Kimball.  Despite lukewarm shooting for much of the period, the Blue used a 10-0 run to build a 28-18 lead before a late surge from the Bears put the score at 32-22 at the break.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Coast Guard tightened its defense and trimmed the lead 33-28 with 15:35 left.  The Blue responded with six straight, building an 11-point lead before Coast Guard's Samantha Coonan stopped the run with a baseline jumper midway through the period.  But Wellesley surged on, opening a 48-30 advantage as they cruised to a 60-39 win.

For Coast Guard, Brown recorded the second double-double of her career, leading the Bears with 14 points and 13 rebounds.  Senior Allison Majcher added eight points and six rebounds, while sophomore Karli Collins tallied six points and six rebounds.  Alexa Hunko grabbed ten rebounds in the loss.

For Wellesley, Kimball tallied 20 points and eight boards in the win.  Malia Maier added 10 points and seven steals.  Ashleigh Sargent and Leslie Leong helped the Blue with nine points and five rebounds each.

The win surrounded a halftime ceremony that recognized 2009-10 NCAA appearances from Randelle Boots (Cross Country, Indoor Track) and Kim Eaton (Golf), along with the varsity crew team that finished fifth in the nation.

The Bears return to action Thursday, December 9, at 7pm, when they play host to the Smith Pioneers.  Wellesley takes the court on Friday, December 10, when they  travel to MIT for a 7:00pm game.
