Late Run Leads Blue Basketball Over Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Visiting Wellesley College forced 24 turnovers and held Clark University to a 5-for-23 performance from three-point land in posting a 59-53 win over the Cougars in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Blue improve to 11-7 overall and 10-4 in league play, sweeping the season series with Clark for the second time in the last three seasons. The Cougars, meanwhile, have now dropped back-to-back games and four of their last six contests and now sit at 11-10 overall and 6-8 in conference action.

Down by two to open the second half, Clark scored five straight points to take a 27-24 lead. The Cougars quick start was answered by an 8-0 Wellesley run - highlighted by a pair of Malia Maier three-pointers – that gave the Blue a 37-32 advantage.

Clark was able to knot the game at 32-32 after a Brooke Brennan pull-up jumper and an Emily Reilly triple less than three minutes later.

As they did before, Wellesley went on a run – this one a 10-0 spurt as Leslie Leong scored five points during the spree.

The Cougars made one final push getting to within three at 46-43 with a little more than five minutes remaining as Ashleigh Condon converted a hoop on the inside.

Meghan Sargent
pushed the Wellesley lead back to five moments later and then the two teams went scoreless for two minutes until a Morgyne Weaver jumper made the score 50-43 with 3:15 to play.

Clark never got closer than six the rest of the way as the Blue held on for the win, thanks in large part to a 5-for-7 showing at the charity stripe in the final 1:15.

Wellesley held a slight 43-39 edge on the glass – but 20 of their rebounds came on the offensive end leading to 18 second chance points. Both teams struggled from behind the arc, combining to go 8-for-38, including a combined 2-for-21 in the first half.

The Blue got a strong performance from its reserves led by Leong, outscoring the Cougar bench 21-5.

Weaver led the Wellesley attack with 14 points and five boards, while Jackson joined her in double figures with ten points and six boards. Leong came off the bench to finish with nine points and six rebounds and Maier stuffed the stat sheet with six points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Condon was the lone Clark player in double figures, registering 16 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists. Both Reilly and Megan Grondin added nine points, while Kelsey Giedymin chipped in with eight points and four boards.

Clark now hits the road for two crucial games next week, first heading to Smith on Wednesday before a trip to Wheaton on Saturday.

Wellesley hosts Wheaton on Wednesday before visiting WPI in a pair of league contests next week.
