Wellesley's Leslie Leong Named NEWMAC Player of the Year

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College senior Leslie Leong highlighted the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball post-season awards by winning NEWMAC Player of the Year honors. Leong also represented the Blue on the All-NEWMAC first team.

Leong, a Sacramento, Calif. native, leads Wellesley in nearly every statistical category this season, averaging 14.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.6 steals per game. She also leads the Blue in shooting, hitting 43% from the field and 40.4% from three-point range.

Leong finished the NEWMAC regular season ranked in the top-10 in the league in points, rebounds, assists, and steals, and was the top-rebounding guard in the conference. This is her second All-Conference award, as she previously earned a spot on the All-NEWMAC second team in 2011.

In her career, Leong has racked up totals of 1,080 points, 687 rebounds, 210 assists, and 154 steals. She is currently fifth all-time in scoring for the Blue and ranks in the top-10 in rebounds, assists, and steals. Leong has played 93 career games for the Blue, averaging 11.6 points and 7.4 rebounds.

Leong is just the second Wellesley student-athlete to be named NEWMAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year. She joins Liza Janssen '94 who won the award in 1993.

The Wellesley basketball team will continue the 2013-14 season on Wednesday, opening the ECAC New England tournament with a quarterfinal match-up. The seventh-seeded Blue head to Endicott to take on the second-seeded Gulls in a 7:00pm clash.
