Blue Basketball Picks Up 67-39 NEWMAC Win over Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – First year Mirella Funari (Phoenix, Ariz.) filled up the stat sheet with eight assists and seven steals to help Wellesley College basketball record a 67-39 NEWMAC win over Mount Holyoke College at Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium on Saturday. 

Funari, first year Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.), sophomore Yitzel Serna (Palmdale, Calif.), junior Caitlin Windross (Eastvale, Calif.) and senior Jiyun Chae (Chantilly, Va.) each put up at least 10 points for the Blue (9-12 Overall, 2-7 NEWMAC). Barrow registered six steals and five assists while Windross grabbed 10 rebounds to earn a double-double. First year Anna Bandini (Raleigh, N.C.) had a game-high four blocks.

Sophomore Libby Harris (Foxborough, Mass.) was the leading scorer for the Lyons (2-21 Overall, 0-9 NEWMAC) with 12 points on four made three pointers. First year Emma Goff (Cohasset, Mass.) and sophomore Taryn White (Alexandria, Va.) had 12 and 11 rebounds respectively.

The Blue took an early 6-2 lead and were up by as many as eight in the first quarter. A late jump shot from Lyons junior Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.) made it 15-9 Wellesley at the end of the first quarter.

Mount Holyoke cut its deficit to four at 19-15 before the Blue responded with an 8-0 run to lead by 12 with under three minutes left in the half. The Lyons got the game back to single digits by the end of the quarter. Wellesley was up 29-20 at halftime.

Wellesley's lead fluctuated between nine and 13 for the entirety of the third. The Blue outscored the Lyons 17-13 in the quarter and led 46-33 after three periods of action.

The Blue dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lyons 21-6, to earn a 67-39 win.

Wellesley shot 27-for-64 (42.2%) overall and went five-of-13 (38.5%) from behind the arc. Mount Holyoke was 13-for-65 (20.0%) from the floor. The Lyons outrebounded the Blue 47-43 and Wellesley converted 20 points off of turnovers.

The Blue will welcome WPI at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 14. The Lyons are at Babson at 6:00 PM that same day.
