Wellesley Crew Wins 2009 Seven Sisters Championship

The Blue, who earn their second overall title and their first since 2001 when they shared the honor with Smith, finished in a tie with Mount Holyoke with 22 total points.  By virtue of a better finish in the first varsity race, Wellesley garnered Championship honors.

The hosts were anchored by a strong novice squad who took first place in both the first and second novice races.  The Blue second varsity tallied a fourth place finish, while the varsity eight took third place.

Mount Holyoke was plagued by missed buoy penalties, taking second in both of the novice races, first in the second varsity race and fourth in the varsity eight race.

In the second novice race, Wellesley and Mount Holyoke were followed by Simmons in third and Smith in fourth.  The novice eight race played out similarly, with the order of finish Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, Simmons and Smith with Bryn Mawr taking fifth place.

A four-second spread separated the first four crews in the second varsity race. Mount Holyoke and Smith tied for first, with each crew recording a time of 16:22.  Simmons took a tight third place, coming in at 16:23, while Wellesley finished fourth in 16:26.  Bryn Mawr took fifth while Mount Holyoke and Smith's third varsity boats rounded out the event with sixth and seventh place finishes.

The final event of the day, the varsity eight race, saw Simons take first with a time of 15:27.  Smith took second place in 15:32, while Wellesley finished third in 15:44.  Mount Holyoke recorded a time of 16:10 for fourth place, while Bryn Mawr took fifth in a time of 16:15.

In the team points, Wellesley (22 pts) and Mount Holyoke (22 pts) were followed closely by Simmons (20 pts) in third place and Smith (19 pts) in fourth.  Bryn Mawr took fifth place.
