Wellesley Crew Takes Home NEWMAC Post-Season Awards

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Fresh off their third conference title in the past three seasons, the Wellesley College crew team took home several post-season awards as announced by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) office on Thursday. Wellesley was honored with two varsity All-Conference nods, an All-Novice selection, and also won a share of the conference's sportsmanship award.

Varsity coxswain Aidan Chambers and varsity rower Ali Pierson were Wellesley's representatives on the All-NEWMAC team announced after racing on Saturday. Chambers, a senior from Bethesda, Md., earns her second NEWMAC recognition, after being named to the All-Novice team in 2010. Pierson, a senior from Baltimore, Md., earned her first NEWMAC award.

Joining Chambers and Pierson with All-Conference honors, was first-year Kelsey Trabucco. A native of Natick, Mass., she earned Wellesley's spot on the NEWMAC All-Novice team.

As a team, Wellesley earned the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award, sharing the award with Clark University. Voted upon by the league's student-athletes, the award recognizes the team that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct. This is the fourth time in the seven year history of the award that it went to the Blue.

Wellesley earned the NEWMAC Championship title by winning the varsity eight race on Sunday, while also taking home the Florence Smith Cup, presented to the overall points leader.

The Blue are back in action on Saturday, heading to Malden River for the Malden Spirit Regatta, hosted by Tufts University. Racing begins at 9:10am.
