Blue Crew Advances to Finals in Each Event at New England Championships
WORCESTER, Mass. -- All four of Wellesley's boats advanced to the grand finals on Saturday, racing at the 2013 New England Rowing Championships. The event was being hosted on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester.
In the varsity eight heats, the Blue ranked second behind Trinity, advancing to the grand finals. Trinity finished in 6:38.6, while Wellesley recorded a 6:43.021. The Blue topped boats from Smith, Coast Guard, Colby and Clark in the heat.
Wellesley's second varsity eight finished third in its heat, recording a time of 7:04.94. Williams topped the field in 6:49.39, followed by Trinity in 6:56.03. All three outraced UNH, Simmons and Middlebury.
In third varsity heat action, Wellesley ranked third in its heat to advance to the finals. The Blue (7:19.47) were topped by Trinity (6:58.81) and WPI (7:15.21), and defeated crews from Wesleyan and Middlebury.
Wellesley's novice boat recorded a second place finish in heats to advance to the finals. Trinity edged Wellesley 7:16.46 to 7:22.61, while both boats outpaced Bates, Coast Guard, Tufts and Bryant.
In finals racing, Wellesley's novice eight led the way with a fourth place overall finish. In the third varsity finals, Wellesley finished fifth overall, just .2 seconds out of fourth place.
The Blue second varsity raced next, making up significant time on Tufts and WPI, finishing sixth overall. The final race of the day featured the varsity eight boats, with Wellesley finishing fifth overall begind Williams, Bates, Trinity and UNH.
Blue crew is back in action next week again at Lake Quinsigamond. This time, Wellesley will take part in the ECAC Championships.
