Blue Crew Earns NEWMAC Rower, Coxswain, Coaching Staff of the Year
WESTWOOD, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) released the 2023 Rowing Major Awards and All-Conference honorees on Tuesday, a week after Blue Crew earned its 11th conference title at the NEWMAC Rowing Championship. Wellesley College crew swept the major awards earning Rower of the Year, Coxswain of the Year, and Coaching Staff of the Year accolades.
Head Crew Coach Tessa Spillane, Associate Head/Novice Crew Coach Emilie Muller, Assistant Crew Coach Emilia Ball '19 | NEWMAC Coaching Staff of the Year
2023 marked Head Crew Coach Tessa Spillane's ninth career Coach of the Year honor, while Muller and Ball were both part of the 2022 Blue Crew team that also received the award. Under Spillane, Muller, and Ball, the Blue captured the 2023 NEWMAC Rowing Championship with first place finishes in the V8+, 2V8+, and 3V8+ races. Wellesley also won its second consecutive Florence Jope Smith Cup, which is awarded to the school with the highest number of points from the overall results at the NEWMAC Championship.

Isabella Santos | Sr. | West Hartford, Conn. | NEWMAC Coxswain of the Year
Santos was the coxswain and Hallstrom rowed in the V8+ boat that captured first in the NEWMAC Rowing Championship with a time of 6:42.7 that was nearly four seconds faster than any other competitor. Hallstrom and Santos both made the NEWMAC First Team All-Conference and were joined by classmate Emma Anghel (Windham, Maine) and sophomore Anya Hanitchak (Andover, Mass.), who made a second appearance on the First Team All-Conference.
Blue Crew heads to Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. at 8:30 AM on Friday with the tem competiting in the National Invitational Rowing Championship.
