Wellesley Fencing's Harney Claims NFC's Sachs Award

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College fencing junior Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) has earned the Northeast Fencing Conference's (NFC) 2017-18 Sachs Award. Named after Elif and Jason Sachs, former coaches at Tufts University, the award is given to the fencer with the best record who started fencing in College. 

 

Now in her third season at Wellesley, Harney put together a 54-24 overall record in sabre during team competitions in 2017-18. Harney was also 14-3 at the first NFC Conference Meet before posting a mark of 11-5 at the third NFC Conference meet. To be eligible for the award, a fencer must fence in a minimum of two-thirds of the scheduled bouts in the season (minimums are 20 for men, 24 for women). The winners are those with the highest winning percentage.

 

"Meg has been an amazing and inspiring student. She has learned to be a skilled fencer and fierce competitor in just a short few years," said Wellesley College head coach Ariana Klinkov. "She approaches learning with an open mind, keen attention to detail, and a tremendous work ethic." 

Klinkov has coached Harney in each of her three years with the Blue, also helping her to qualify for the NCAA Northeast Regional in each year. This season, Harney finished 28th overall in sabre. She was 24th overall in 2017 and 31st during her rookie campaing in 2016.

 

Overall the Blue finished 2017-18 with a 20-9 record, the programs first 20-win campaign since 2010-11.
