Wellesley Fencing Tops Tufts, Falls at Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Wellesley College fencing defeated Tufts University, 22-5, but fell to host Brandeis University, 17-10, on Tuesday evening at the Gosman Athletic Center. The Blue, in action for the first time since December 5th, are now 18-7 overall. 

Junior Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) finished with a team-high five bout victories in epee. In foil, senior Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) and first year Alexia Gilioli (New York, N.Y.) each posted four victories. First year Brooke Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) picked up the only Blue win in sabre. The Blue won sabre by default (9-0) against the Jumbos. 

Brandeis 17, Wellesley 10

Wellesley earned a 5-4 victory in epee but setbacks of 5-4 in foil and 8-1 in sabre saw the Judges earn the 17-10 win. Calventus-Coveney clinched the epee victory in the final bout of the match to finish with a 3-0 record. In foil, a narrow 5-4 setback for Isabella Stewart (Scarsdale, N.Y.) in the final bout helped the Judges hold on for the win.

Wellesley 22, Tufts 5 

The Blue earned a 9-0 win in foil and dropped a 4-5 decision in epee in a lopsided win over Tufts. Calventus-Coveney finished with a 2-1 mark in epee but Tufts claimed the victory with a win in the final bout. Maurer was 3-0 in the 9-0 foil sweep, while Gilioli finished with a 2-0 mark. 

The Blue will close out the Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) season on Sunday, February 9th, at Tufts. Competition for the day begins at 10:00 AM.
