Epee Squad Defeats Division I Northwestern as Wellesley College Goes 7-1 at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y - Wellesley College fencing had a strong 7-1 performance in their second event of the season at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday.

Senior Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) and first year Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) each only had a single loss with 17 and 14 wins in epee respectively. The epee squad went a perfect 8-0, including an impressive 5-4 win over Division I Northwestern. Sophomore Elena Vona (Millstone, N.J.) add 11 additional wins for epee.

The foil squad went 7-1, only falling to Northwestern. Junior Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) led the Blue with 11 wins, while senior Isabella Stewart (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and first year Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) added 10 wins each. Senior Alexia Gilioli (New York, N.Y.) went 8-1 in foil while senior Sejal Saxena (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and sophomore Ella Boodell (Edgemont, N.Y.) had six wins. 

The sabre squad won five matches. First year Sharon Huang (Toronto, Ontario) won 11 matches and senior Hunter Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) and sophomore Makana Burch (Portland, Ore.) both had 10 wins. Sophomore Mia Chao (Washington, D.C.) recorded four wins in her first collegiate event, and sophomore Leena Hobson (Oakland, Calif.) chipped in four wins.

Wellesley 17, Stevens 10

Wellesley opened their day with a 17-10 win over Stevens. Stewart went 3-0 and Po grabbed two wins as Foil won 6-3. Epee commanded an 8-1 win with Kimura, Xu, and Vona all went undefeated while first year Michelle Pan (Arlington, Mass.) grabbed a win. Dodrill, Burch, and Sharon Huang each got a win as sabre fell 6-3.

Wellesley 27, Fairleigh Dickinson 0

The Blue pulled off a shutout over FDU in their second match. Gina Huang, Stewart, and Saxon grabbed multiple wins at foil, Kimora, Pan, and first year Lily Millard (Selkirk, N.Y.) took the wins at Epee, and Burch, Chao, and Hobson swept sabre for Wellesley.

Wellesley 21, Cleveland State 6

Foil and epee both won 8-1 for Wellesley while sabre edged out a 5-4 victory. Po won all three matches for foil, while Saxena and Gina Huang both had two wins. Kimura earned a sweep for epee, Vona and Xu had two wins, and Millard picked up a win. Sharon Huang won three matches for sabre and Dodrill and Burch both got a win to give sabre five points.

Wellesley 20, Lafayette 7

Foil won 8-1 while epee and sabre each took 6-3 wins over Lafayette. Gina Huang and Po both won all three of their matches, while Stewart won two of three. Kimora and Xu went undefeated and Dodrill, Burch, and Sharon Huang each got two wins.

Wellesley 19, LIU 8

Wellesley won convincingly over LIU after a loss to Sharks only three weeks ago. Epee won 8-1 and foil 7-2 for Wellesley. Boodle, Gilioli, Kimora, and Xu all nabbed three wins for the Blue while Vona and Dodrill added two wins each.

Wellesley 23, Hunter 4

Foil squad swept Hunter, as Boodell, Stewart, and Po each won all three of their matches. All winning three matches was Pan, with Xu, Dodrill, Chao, and Dobson all winning two matches.

Northwestern 18, Wellesley 9

The Blue finally suffered their first defeat of the day to Division I Northwestern, though epee squad won 5-4. Kimora and Xu won two matches in epee with Vona adding another. Gilioli won two matches in foil while Burch and Sharon Huang each took one win in sabre. 

Wellesley 20, Haverford 7

Wellesley concluded the day with one last win. Gilioli won three more wins. Kimura, Vona, and Xu didn't drop a match in epee and Dodrill and Sharon Huang also went undefeated in sabre.

The Blue travel to Brandeis next weekend for the first Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) meet at 10 AM on Sunday.
