Wellesley Fencing Earns a Pair of Wins at NFC Conference Meet No. 1

BOSTON, Mass. – Wellesley College fencing earned a pair of wins over Sacred Heart and Vassar at the Northeast Fencing Conference Meet No. 1, hosted by Boston College on Sunday. The Blue were competitive against several ranked Division III teams and a few Division I teams.

Epee squad went 6-2, including notable victories over Division I Brown and Boston College as well as a win against Tufts. Sophomore Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) led the unit with 14 victories, while first year Alisha Li (Warren, N.J.) and sophomore Michelle Pan (Arlington, Mass.) added 13 and eight victories respectively.

Foil squad won five matches, including wins over Division III ranked Brandeis and Tufts. First year Phoebe Li (Palo Alto, Calif.) won 14 bouts on the day while classmate Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) and sophomore Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) both had double-digit victories.

Junior Makana Burch (Washougal, Wash.) was the leader for sabre squad with nine wins.

Brandeis 14, Wellesley 13

Foil squad picked up a 7-2 win over Brandeis with Khoo and P. Li both going 3-0 and senior Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) adding a win. Xu earned two wins in epee and A. Li notched one. Burch went 2-1 in sabre and first year Rebecca Hsieh (Annandale, Va.) had a bout victory.

Brown 18, Wellesley 9

Epee squad earned a 6-3 victory against Brown, with Xu winning all three matches. Pan grabbed two wins and A. Li earned one. Khoo had a pair of victories for foil and Burch had one for sabre.

Tufts 15, Wellesley 12

Both epee and foil defeated Tufts and P. Li, A. Li, Xu, and junior Elena Vona (Millstone, N.J.) all had multiple bout wins for the Blue. Po and Huang each had one win for Wellesley in foil.

Wagner 16, Wellesley 11

Again foil and epee earned squad wins and G. Huang, Po, and Pan all won two matches. P. Li picked up a foil victory, A. Li, Xu, and first year Riley Weed (Guilford, Conn.) each had one for epee, and Burch had a win in sabre.

Boston College 15, Wellesley 12

Epee squad won a fourth straight match. Xu went 3-0, A. Li won two of three matches, and Vona added a point. P. Li won two foil bouts while Huang and Khoo both grabbed one win. Burch and Hsieh both secured one win for sabre.

MIT 21, Wellesley 6

Huang won two matches in foil while Po, A. Li, Pan, and Xu all scored one victory for the Blue.

Wellesley 18, Sacred Heart 9

Huang, P. Li, and Po each earned a 3-0 sweep to give foil a 9-0 shutout. A. Li grabbed two wins in epee while Xu, Vona, Burch and Hsieh all won a match for Wellesley.

Wellesley 17, Vassar 10

Huang, Khoo, and P. Li combined for eight wins in foil to give the squad a fifth win on the day. Pan went 3-0 in epee and A. Li and Xu combined for three more wins. Burch was perfect with three victories for sabre.

The Blue return to action on Sunday, December 3 at the Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, Mass. Competition will begin at 9:00 AM.
