Wellesley Fencing Goes Undefeated at Eric Sollee Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. – Wellesley College fencing won all four of its matches, including a 15-12 win over Division III No. 4 New York University, at Brandeis University's Eric Sollee Invitational on Saturday.

Foil squad had a perfect 4-0 day. Sophomore Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) was nearly perfect, winning 11 out of 12 bouts on the day. Senior Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) and first years Phoebe Li (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) all earned five victories.

Epee squad went 3-1 on Saturday. Sophomore Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) and first year Alisha Li (Warren, N.J.) won 11 and 10 matches respectively. First year Riley Weed (Guilford, Conn.) went 5-1 for the Blue.

Sabre squad defeated Hunter and Haverford. Juniors Makana Burch (Washougal, Wash.) and Mia Chao (Washington, D.C.) combined for 19 total wins while first year Naomi Wang (Boston, Mass.) contributed four victories.

Wellesley 24, Hunter 3

All three squads picked up 8-1 victories over Hunter. Po, Burch, Chao, Xu, Huang and A. Li all had perfect 3-0 performances. Sophomores Claire Ma (Boston, Mass.) and Wang both had two wins while classmate Lily Millard (Selkirk, N.Y.) and Weed earned a victory apiece. 

Wellesley 15, New York U. 12

Khoo went 3-0 while Huang and P. Li both earned two wins to foil squad a 7-2 victory over NYU. Xu and Chao both had a pair of victories and Wang, Burch, A. Li and Weed all won one bout.

Wellesley 23, Haverford 4

Huang, P. Li, A. Li, Xu, Burch and Chao each notched three more wins for Wellesley. Weed took two victories and Millard, Po and Wang had one.

Wellesley 17, Stevens 10

For a second consecutive match, Huang, A. Li, Xu and Burch won all three of their respective bouts. Khoo tacked on a pair of victories and Po, Weed and Chao all earned one win.

The Blue will return to Brandeis for a dual match with the Judges at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, January 30.
