Wellesley Fencing Wraps Up Season at NCAA Northeast Regional; Phoebe Li Makes Finals

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Wellesley College fencing sophomore Phoebe Li (Palo Alto, Calif.) advanced to the foil finals and placed 12th at Sunday's NCAA Northeast Regional.  11 members of the Blue competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional. The Regional was hosted by Long Island University Post.

Phoebe Li is the first member of the Blue to make the final round at the NCAA Northeast Regional since Brie Maurer '20 and Julia Calventus-Coveney '21 did it in 2019.

In addition to P. Li, sophomore Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) and first years Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) and Alisha Li (Warren, N.J.) all made the quarterfinal round. Huang and Khoo both had top-30 finishes in foil.

Women's Foil

P. Li made the finals in foil while Huang and Khoo advanced to the quarterfinals. 

P. Li recorded a 3-3 record (+2 touch ratio) in the semifinals. The record was good enough to qualify for the final round. P. Li went 0-11 (-37 touch ratio) in the finals to end in 12th overall.

In the quarterfinals, P. Li's' 3-3 record and +4 touch ratio helped her advance to the semifinals. Huang went 2-4 (-8 touch ratio) in the quarterfinals and placed 27th. Khoo was 1-5 (-10 touch ratio) and took 30th.

Huang went 4-0 with a +7 touch ratio in the opening pool. Khoo and Li both went 3-1 in the initial round. Li sported a +10 touch ratio. Khoo put up a +6 touch ratio.

Senior Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) and sophomore Claire Ma (Boston, Mass.) didn't advance out of the initial round. Po claimed 58th, going 0-4 with a touch ratio of -19. Ma was 0-4 with a -18 touch ratio to tie for 56th.

Women's Epee

A. Li advanced to the quarterfinals by going 3-1 with a +7 touch ratio. In the quarterfinals. A. Li won one of six bouts and did not advance, finishing 32nd overall.

Sophomore Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) narrowly missed advancing out of the initial round with a 2-2 record and an even touch ratio. Xu ended up in 36th place. Classmate Lily Millard (Selkirk, N.Y.) and first year Riley Weed (Guilford, Conn.) both went 1-3 in the opening pool and didn't advance. Weed claimed 46th with a -7 touch ratio and Millard took 47th with a -9 touch ratio.

Women's Sabre

Junior Makana Burch (Washougal, Wash.) went 1-3 in the opening round with a -9 touch ratio to finish 39th. Sophomore Naomi Wang (Boston, Mass.) tied for 42nd, going 0-4 with a -17 touch ratio. Neither advanced out of the initial round.
