Blue Golf Finishes Sixth as Ann S. Batchelder Invite Concludes

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Williams College made it four in a row, nabbing the team title at the 2013 Ann S. Batchelder Invitational, hosted by Wellesley College. The two-day event was held on the par-72, 5,860-yard Nehoiden Golf Course on the Wellesley campus.

Williams used a commanding 20-stroke lead on day one to set up the victory. The Ephs shot rounds of 305 and 314 to finish with a 619, which was 30 strokes ahead of second-place Amherst (325-324—649).

Mount Holyoke finished in third place, recording rounds of 327 and 333, for a 660 total, while New York University was seven strokes behind in fourth with scores of 327 and 340, for a 667. Fifth-place Vassar pulled away from Wellesley, with a 343 on day two, combining a day-one score of 360 for a 703. The hosts improved by two strokes on day to, recording scores of 365 and 363, for a 728.

Westfield State dropped 13 strokes on day two, combining a 390 and a 377 for a seventh place score of 767. William Smith also saw a day-two improvement, finishing in eighth place with an 804 (408-396).

Individually, Williams' Georgiana Salant became a three-time winner of the event, carding a tournament low of 72 on day two after shooting a 77 on day one. She finished with a total of 149 for the medalist honors. Tracy Kim of Williams finished second overall, with scores of 74 and 80 for a 154, while teammate Sarah Hasselman took third with a 157 (76-81).

For host Wellesley, sophomore Lei Wei was the top finisher for the Blue. She recorded rounds of 90 and 87 for a 177 total, ranking her 21st overall. First-year Jacqueline Lu also picked up a top-25 finish, with rounds of 87 and 91 for a 178.

Junior Alexandria Lee finished 32nd overall, after shaving six strokes off her day one score. She finished with rounds of 97 and 91 for a 188. Junior Michelle Brann and senior Lindsey Shepardson were the next finishers for the Blue. Brann carded a 190 (91-99), while Shepardson shot a 192 (98-94). Rounding out the Wellesley golfers, junior Haneen Anbarserri shot a 204 (98-106).

This weekend's tournament marks the end of the fall season for the Blue golfers. The team will be back in action in the spring.

Ann S. Batchelder was a Wellesley faculty member for 38 years, teaching physical education and also serving as one of the school's varsity squash coaches. She retired in spring of 2009, establishing a charitable gift annuity for the Friends of Wellesley College Athletics. Her generosity created one of the largest gifts from a member of the College's academic community and will benefit Wellesley student-athletes for years to come.
