UMass Dartmouth Downs Wellesley Lacrosse in Overtime, 14-13

WELLESLEY, Mass.-- UMass Dartmouth senior Leah Douty (Framingham, Mass.) scored at 4:46 of the first overtime to lift the visiting Corsairs to a 14-13 victory over Wellesley College lacrosse on Tuesday afternoon at the Wellesley Fields Complex.

UMass Dartmouth improves to 2-1 on the season while the Blue drop to 0-2 following their second non-conference setback of the year.

Douty led the Corsairs with six goals, three assists, four draw controls, and four ground balls. Senior Erin Kish (Littleton, Mass.) netted five goals and classmate Raquel Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) recorded a game-high nine draw controls to help UMass Dartmouth secure the victory.  

Junior Lena Engbretson (Beaverton, Ore.) paced the Blue with four goals, including the game-tying goal with nine seconds remaining to force the overtime period. Juniors Ellie Chalphin (Philadelphia, Pa.), Olivia Strobl (Stafford, Va.), and Dacia Persky (Las Vegas, Nev.) all chipped in with goals for the Blue. Chalpin recorded a hat-trick, while Strobl and Persky each had two. Senior Jenna Mulrenan (Glen Ridge, N.J.) led all players with four caused turnovers, while Blue first year Louise Conaty (Wilmington, Del.) picked-up a game-high six ground balls.

Wellesley scored the first three goals to take a 3-0 lead until UMass Dartmouth answered with three goals of their own starting at 20:26 to remain 3-3. Kish, senior Julia DiPillo (Medway, Mass.) and Douty each scored in the first half to give the Corsairs a 8-6 advantage going into the halftime break.

Chalphin netted back-to-back Blue goals to tie the game, 8-8, 4:41 into the second, but the visitors would rally for three straight tallies, with Kish and Douty scoring at 23:51 and 22:44, respectively, before sophomore Gabby Giangrande (Westbrook, Conn.) put UMass Dartmouth up three with her third of the season at 16:45. Engbretson and the Blue countered with a furious rally, as the Wellesley junior scored all four of her goals over the final 16:45 of play, including the final two goals at 3:21 and at nine seconds, to help force overtime.

The Blue won the opening draw control in overtime but could not convert on the offensive end, as Kish forced a turnover and play moved to the Wellesley end. Douty then took a feed from DiPillo and skipped a shot off the turf and past Wellesley junior goalkeeper Chloe Tucker (San Ramon, Calif.) for the game-winner.

The Corsairs held the advantage in shots, 31-27, and draw controls, 18-11, in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Burchill (Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded 11 saves to earn the victory for the Corsairs and improve to 2-1 on the season. Tucker (0-2) had 10 saves in the game for the Blue.

Both teams will play again on Thursday, March 8 at 4:00 PM. Wellesley will travel to Eastern Connecticut State and UMass Dartmouth will host Salve Regina.
