Wellesley Lacrosse Downed by Salve Regina, 17-3

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Led by six goals from senior Kelly Ventura (Floral Park, N.Y.), Salve Regina defeated Wellesley College lacrosse 17-3 on Wednesday at Butler Stadium.

In addition to Ventura, sophomores Emma Periera (Easton, Mass.), Samantha Moleti (Township of Washington, N.J.), and Holly Sullivan (Pembroke, Mass.) all had multiple goals for the Seahawks (2-3). Moleti lead SRU with three assists and four draw controls while Periera scooped up five ground balls. Sophomore Grace Haesche (Warwick, N.Y.) stopped 14 shots for the Seahawks.

Junior Gabrielle Shell had two goals for the Blue (2-2) while first year Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) added a goal of her own. Senior defender Salome Greene (Minnetrista, Minn.) snatched four ground balls and forced a pair of turnovers for the defense while first year goalie Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) made eight saves in net.

The Seahawks scored the first three goals of the game with Ventura scoring twice and Moleti earning two assists in the period before Shell scored for Wellesley to keep the game 3-1 in the Seahawks favor through one.

Salve Regina continued to pepper Wellesley with shots, connecting on four in the second quarter, including two from Periera, one off of a free position shot. Tipton connected with a shot that found the back of the net late in the period to keep Salve's lead at 7-2 going into the half.

The third quarter saw the Seahawks offense take over, with seven unaswered goals, including a trio from Ventura, who now has a team-leading 16 season goals for SRU. The Seahawks ran their lead to 17-2 before Shell sliced through the defense to get the score to its final outcome of 17-3.

The Seahawks outshot the Blue 33-21, while SRU converted on seven of 11 free position shots. Wellesley won 13 draw controls to Salve Regina's 11.

The Blue go on the road Saturday at 12:00 PM to begin New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Smith while the Seahawks finish their two-game roadtrip next Monday with a 7:00 PM game at Simmons.
