Wellesley Lacrosse Falls to Wheaton, 23-6

NORTON, Mass. - Wheaton secured a comfortable 23-6 win over Wellesley College lacrosse in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Saturday from Nordin Field.

Senior Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) tallied nine points for the Lyons (6-2 overall, 2-0 NEWMAC) with six goals and three assists. Classmate Jessie Kilburn (North Brandford, Conn.) chipped in four goals and an assist while Lara Finnie had a hat-trick and a pair of assists. Senior goalie Emily Kelly (Norwell, Mass.) stopped five shots in net for Wheaton.

The Blue (2-5 Overall, 0-2 NEWMAC) were paced by a hat-trick from first year Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) and two goals and an assist from senior captain Liz Sugg (Palermo, Maine). First year Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) racked up nine saves, while senior Hannah Pangborn (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Gianna Salvatora (Pittsburgh, Pa.) combined for four saves.

Wheaton scored four goals in the first five minutes with first year Jessica Chamberlain (Bow, N.H.) putting a pair of shots into the goal while Finnie had a goal and an assist. Sugg and sophomore Mattie Knowles (Newburyport, Mass.) both scored for Wellesley in the first as the Blue trailed 7-2 after a quarter.

A Harvey goal upped the Lyons' lead to 9-2 in the second before Tipton broke loose, scoring a natural hat-trick for the Blue to cut the deficit to four. However, the Lyons scored 11 straight goals with a variety of scorers, and by the the time Sugg scored for Wellesley early in the fourth the scored stood 20-6 in Wheaton' favor. The Lyons closed out the game with three more goals, including one from Harvey.

The Lyon outshot the Blue 40-14, with Wheaton snatching 33 ground balls to Wellesley's 17. The host Lyons also scored on seven of 12 free position shots.

The Blue remain on the road next Wednesday at 5:00 PM against Southern Maine while Wheaton travels to Worcester State for a 4:00 PM game on the same day.
