Blue Lacrosse Earns 10-6 Victory Against Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Senior Liz Sugg (Palermo, Maine) scored a hat trick and added an assist to lead Wellesley College lacrosse to a 10-6 victory over Seven Sisters rival Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday at the Mount Holyoke Turf and Track Complex.

Sugg also secured five draw controls and scooped up five ground balls, while first year Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) and junior Gabrielle Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) each added a pair of goals for Wellesley (5-10 overall, 3-5 NEWMAC). First year Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.) registered a game-high three goals and three assists in the setback for Mount Holyoke (3-11 overall, 0-8 NEWMAC).

Wellesley got out to a 6-1 lead in the opening half and never trailed in the contest. First year Phoebe Calero (Havre de Grace, Md.) set-up Shell 35 seconds into the contest. Tipton and first year Camille Francis (Bowie, Md.) also scored in the opening quarter to help the Blue take a 3-1 lead after one period. Sugg and junior Willa McGough (Plainfield, N.H.) quickly added on two more goals for the Blue in the second, with Sugg also assisting on McGough's shot. 

The Blue eventually pushed the lead to 7-2 on goals from Sugg and Calero. Bisson helped the hosts trim the deficit back to two by halftime. The first year scored a pair of goals, including one with 14 seconds remaining in the half, and assisted on Ella Phillips (Sandwich, Mass.) 12th of the season at 8:05 of the second. 

The Blue limited the Lyons to 11 shots on goal and surrendered just one goal in the second half. Madison Millyan's (Winchester, Mass.) marker at 5:33 of the third quarter pulled the Lyons within one but it was the final goal of the contest for Mount Holyoke. Sugg, Tipton and Shell each scored after halftime to help the Blue secure the 10-6 win. 

First year Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) and senior Hannah Pangborn (Raleigh, N.C.) combined to make eight saves in goal for the Blue. Sophomore Emma Tower (Dover, N.H.) made 16 saves in the loss for the Lyons. 

Sophomore Anna Tutek (Trumbull, Conn.) picked-up a team-high six ground balls for Wellesley as the Blue finished with a 32-19 advantage in ground balls. Wellesley also had the edge in shots, 40-24, and draw controls, 13-7.

The Blue will close out the regular season with a home game against MIT next Wednesday at 7:00 PM while the Lyons will travel to take on Clark on the same date and time.
