Worcester State Downs Wellesley Lacrosse

WORCESTER, Mass. – 10 members of Worcester State University scored in a 19-5 victory over Wellesley College lacrosse at John Coughlin Memorial Field on Saturday.

Grad student Shea Jarvis (Auburn, Mass.) and junior Abigail Wing (Griswold, Conn.) each scored four goals for the Lancers (2-1 Overall). Sophomore Molly Witkowski led all student-athletes with seven points (three goals, four assists). First year Meghan Bowen (Westfield, Mass.) won five draw controls and snagged two ground balls. Classmate Jordyn Bolduc (Auburn, Mass.) stopped four shots for Worcester State.

Senior Gabrielle Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and sophomore Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) each had two goals and an assist for the Blue (0-3 Overall). Sophomore Allie Beighle (Missoula, Mont.) scored a first year goal for Wellesley. Junior Ryan Boone (Scotch Plains, N.J.) collected five ground balls and sophomore Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) saved six shots.

The Lancers led 6-1 after one quarter of play. Witkowski scored two goals for Worcester State and sophomore Mckayla Fisher (Peabody, Mass.) added a goal with two assists. Jarvis, first year Madigan Kelley (Bourne, Mass.) and junior Ashley Hurley (Feeding Hills, Mass.) each contributed a goal. Shell earned the lone score of the period for the Blue, assisted by first year Amelia Dupont (New York, N.Y.).

The 6-1 score repeated itself in the second quarter. Wing scored a trio of goals and Jarvis knocked in two. Junior Hannah Erickson (Dunstable, Mass.) assisted on a pair of goals. Tipton tacked on a goal for Wellesley off of a pass from Shell.

Worcester State ran its lead to 17-2 by the end of the third quarter. Sophomore Abigail Vincent (Lakeville, Mass.) contributed three points (two goals, one assist) in the quarter. 

Tipton gave the Blue a third tally early in the fourth before Jarvis and sophomore Shannon Donahue (Dennis, Mass.) made the score 19-3. Beighle connected on a free-position shot for the Blue. Shell added another for Wellesley with an assist to Tipton to make the score 19-5 as time expired.

Worcester State doubled up Wellesley in shots, 31-15. The Lancers were successful on 4-of-5 free position shots and won 19 draw controls to Wellesley's seven.

Wellesley will host its home opener on Tuesday, March 5 at 4:30 against Curry. Worcester State finishes a two-game homestand against Simmons at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, March 6.
