Smith Soccer Gets By Wellesley, 1-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Smith College goalkeeper Lindsey Gregor was the difference-maker, earning a 1-0 shutout as the Pioneers downed host Wellesley College, in NEWMAC soccer action at Wellesley.  The win improves Smith to 2-9 overall, with a 1-5 conference mark, while the Blue fall to 3-9-3, with a 2-4 NEWMAC record.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead in the second half, Gregor withstood a barrage of Wellesley shots, as the Blue fired off 11 attempts in a 13-minute span. The senior made four of her six total saves during that stretch, to earn her second shutout of the season.

Smith got their goal in the 41st minute of play, after a K.K. Lane thru ball found a charging Ellie Theurer. Theurer knocked it home on a long shot from the far left, giving the Pioneers the 1-0 advantage that would stick.

After being out-shot 9-5 in the first half, Wellesley recorded a 19-2 shot advantage in the second period, ending the game with a 24-11 edge. The Blue also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

In goal for the Blue, Clair Cerda and SJ Gray split time with Cerda making four saves in the first half. Gray remained largely untested, not needing a save in 45 scoreless minutes.

Up next for Smith, the Pioneers travel to Coast Guard on Tuesday in a 7:00pm NEWMAC match-up. Wellesley next plays at MIT on Tuesday at 4:00pm.
