Wellesley Soccer Downs Haverford, 1-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Chelsea-Ann Patry's 23rd minute goal led the Wellesley College soccer team to its first victory of the 2012 season, a 1-0 win over Haverford in the opening game of the Wellesley Classic.

Wellesley's record now stands at 1-2-1, while Haverford suffers its first loss of the season, dipping to 2-1.

22 minutes into the contest, Patry made a nice move, dribbling in from the right side to fake out the keeper. Her hard shot then found the back of the net, giving the Blue the 1-0 advantage that would stick.

Haverford came on strong in the second half, outshooting Wellesley 8-4, but could not connect. The Fords best chance to tally the equalizer came in the 86th minute as Jo Haller's shot evaded the Wellesley keeper, but was just wide of the goal.

Wellesley's Claire Cerda and Kat Goldsmith combined for the shutout victory. Cerda was untested without a shot on goal in the first half, while Goldsmith tallied three saves in the second half.

For Haverford, Robin Chernow played all 90 in net, recording two stops.

Wellesley continues play in its home tournament, facing Potsdam State tomorrow at 1:00pm. Haverford heads across town to Babson, to take on the Beavers at 1:00pm.
