Offense Comes Alive as Blue Soccer Defeats SUNY Potsdam

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College soccer team had a breakout game offensively as the Blue picked up a 6-0 victory over SUNY Potsdam on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Wellesley to 2-2-1 this season, while the Bears even their ledger to 2-2.

Wellesley finishes their home tournament with a 2-0 mark, after defeating Haverford 1-0 on Saturday. Babson, who co-hosted the event, and Haverford both finished the tournament 1-1, while SUNY Potsdam went 0-2.

The six goals for Wellesley were the most for the Blue since the team topped Coast Guard 6-1 in September of 2007. Today's margin of victory was also the highest for the program since a 6-0 win over Emerson in September of 2005.

Wellesley scored early and often, starting the offensive attack with a 17th-minute goal off a corner. Kara Lungmus sent it in and Jennifer Marble converted for the 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Emily Wilson made it 2-0 Blue, launching a high shot over the Potsdam keepers head. Lena Cardoso capped the first half offense with a goal in the 35th minute, tapping in a rebound off a save for a 3-0 Wellesley lead.

The Blue added three more second half goals to set the final to 6-0. Wilson scored her second of the contest to make it 4-0, while Abigail Hess recorded the first goal of her career in the 66th minute. Both scores were assisted by Chelsea-Ann Patry. In the 77th-minute Juliette Fry found the back of the net for the final goal of the contest and her first collegiate score.

Wellesley ended the game with a 21-3 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

In goal for the Blue, Claire Cerda played the first half, making one save. Kat Goldsmith came on in relief, recording 45 scoreless minutes. For Potsdam, Shannon Weader recorded three saves in 53 minutes of action, while Jaime Durant made four stops.

Wellesley is off until Saturday, September 15th when the Blue travel to Coast Guard to open the NEWMAC season. Potsdam next plays on Wednesday, hosting St. Lawrence at 5:00pm.
