Patry’s Game-Winner Leads Blue Soccer Past Smith on Homecoming

WELLESLEY, Mass.  – Senior Chelsea-Ann Patry scored the game-winning goal just over four minutes into overtime as the Wellesley College soccer team picked up a thrilling 1-0 NEWMAC win over Smith College on Homecoming at Wellesley. The Blue improved to 5-4-1, 2-1 in the NEWMAC, while Smith falls to 4-5, 1-2 in league play.

Patry received a feed from senior Megan Turchi and carried it down field before launching a beautiful shot high into the top right corner of the net. The goal was Patry's third of the season and also her second game-winner this year.

The Blue dominated play much of the way, building a 16-4 advantage in shots and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks. Smith goalie Cody Norris kept the Pioneers in the game, however, denying the Blue until the overtime score.

Wellesley had a several opportunities late in regulation, including a header from senior Jennifer Marble and a shot from sophomore Chloe Breider after a 66th-minute corner kick. Marble's header was saved by Norris, while Breider's bid was stopped by a Smith field player to preserve the tie.

Smith had two shots late in the game, but attempts from Olivia Mallari and GiGi Ross were saved by Wellesley keeper, Claire Cerda.

Both keepers were solid in net, with Norris recording 10 total stops and Cerda finishing the game with four.

Wellesley will next play on Tuesday, traveling to MIT at 4:00pm. Smith returns home to face Coast Guard, also on Tuesday at 4:00pm.
