Clark Hands Wellesley Soccer 2-0 Loss

Worcester, Mass. -- Host Clark University got single goals in each half and goalkeeper Gabby Paolini made it stand up as the Cougars won their second straight game with a 2-0 win over Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action.

Paolini recorded her second consecutive shutout and the fourth of her career and has now given up just two goals in her last 270 minutes of action.

Clark, meanwhile, has won three of their last four games and improves to 5-7-1 overall, while the Blue are now 5-6-1. Both teams are 2-3 in league play.

The Cougars opened up the scoring in the fourth minute when a turnover deep in the Wellesley zone found the feet of Nikki Feinberg who blasted a shot past Claire Cerda  for her second goal in as many games.

Neither team had a real shot at scoring until the early portion of the second half when Janelle Pasternack had her shot hit the inside part of the right post and then kicked aside by Cerda.

Wellesley had a similar circumstance moments later when Abigail Hess took a corner kick from Kara Lungmus  and fired a shot that Paolini deflected into the crossbar. The ball bounced down from the bar and was knocked out of the box by a Clark defender.

The Cougar got an insurance goal in the 74th minute when Pasternack took a through ball up the right side from Jenna Zarou , dribbled in, sending a shot into the upper left hand corner for her fourth goal of the season.

Clark held an 11-8 edge in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Cerda made five stops for the Blue in defeat, while Paolini, who entered the game ranked second in the league in saves, needed to turn back just two.

Both teams will now have a week off before hitting the road for NEWMAC contests next Saturday. The Cougars travel down Park Avenue for a meeting with WPI, while Wellesley ventures to Mount Holyoke.
