Blue Soccer Falls in Overtime to Fitchburg State

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Nicole Stone scored three minutes into overtime, as the visiting Fitchburg State University soccer team topped Wellesley College, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon. The victory improves the Falcons to 3-10, while the Blue dip to 5-7-1.

After a Fitchburg State throw in, Stone collected a loose ball, turned around a defender and launched a high shot into the back right corner of the net. It was the second goal and second game-winner of the season for Stone, who entered the scoreless game just 29 seconds before her strike.

In the first half, Wellesley had a chance to get on the board in the 37th-minute when Emily Wilson threaded a ball through to the front of the box and found Kara Lungmus. Lungmus was able to get a clean shot on the ball, but her attempt went high, keeping the game scoreless.

The Blue had two other great opportunities to get on the board, narrowly missing goals in the 57th and 71st-minutes. Cardoso was just off the mark with both chances, the second coming with a defender at her feet after a feed on a free kick.

Fitchburg State was held without a shot until the 85th minute of play. Mikaela Foley recorded both attempts in regulation for the Falcons, but Wellesley's Claire Cerda saved each chance, sending the game to overtime.

The first shot in the overtime period for either team was Stone's attempt, which ended the game in the 93rd-minute.

For the game, Wellesley held a 15-3 advantage in shots, while holding a 4-1 edge in corner kickers.

Fitchburg State's Kelsey Ford picked up her first win of the season, making two saves in 34 minutes of work. Jillian Kirouac was the starter for the Falcons, making four total saves. For Wellesley, Cerda finished the game with two stops.

Wellesley is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Mount Holyoke for a 1:00pm NEWMAC clash. Fitchburg State returns to the field on Saturday, hosting MASCAC-rival Framingham State at 12:00pm.
