Wellesley Soccer Battles Western New England to Double-OT Tie

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Visiting Wellesley and Western New England combined for 32 shots, including 15 on goal, in Tuesday's 0-0 draw in double overtime in non-conference women's soccer action at Suprenant Field.

The Blue are now 4-6-1 overall while the Golden Bears are 6-3-2 on the season.

Western New England sophomore goalkeeper Briana Kubik made seven saves, earning her third consecutive shutout (fifth overall) and extending her opponents' scoreless streak to 291 minutes. Claire Cerda, who started in net for the Blue, had three saves while Kat Goldsmith stopped eight shots over the last 65 minutes to notch a team shutout.

The teams were evenly matched just as the scoreless result indicated. Western New England had an 18 to 14 edge in shots and 8-7 with shots on goal, while Wellesley led by a slim 5-3 margin on corner kicks.

Western New England's Brionna Voight led all players with six shots for the Golden Bears. LJ Foster had four shots for the Blue, including three of the team's seven on target.

Western New England had the best two scoring opportunities in the first half when in the 13th minute Alicia Lewis blasted a shot off the cross bar and the ball landed just before the goal line before being cleared away, and then in the 24th Bonnie Bousquet hit the post.

Neither team could find the back of the net during a busy pair of 10-minute extra sessions. Western New England had seven shots to three for Wellesley.
