Goldsmith Saves 14 as Blue Soccer Ties #19 MIT, 0-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College and MIT played to a scoreless tie after double-overtime in NEWMAC women's soccer action at Wellesley on Tuesday afternoon. The Engineers, ranked #19 in the latest national poll, and #2 in the region, move to 8-2-3 (4-1-1 NEWMAC), while Wellesley's season mark now stands at 6-7-2 (3-1-1).

MIT held a 24-3 advantage in shots, and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks, but Wellesley goalkeeper Kat Goldsmith finished with 14 saves to keep the Engineers off the board. MIT's Ambika Krishnamachar piled on 14 total shots, including eight on goal to lead the Engineer offense.

MIT controlled play in the first half, outshooting the Blue, 10-1. The Engineers had their best chance to score in the 30th minute, when Krishnamachar recorded three straight shots in just over a minute. Wellesley's Goldsmith made two saves, however, with the third Krishnamachar attempt going wide, preserving the 0-0 game.

Goldsmith finished the first half with seven saves. MIT's Lauren Ullmann faced just one shot, an eighth-minute attempt from Wellesley's LJ Foster, that went high.

MIT held a similar offensive edge in the second period, combining for 10 shots to Wellesley's 12. The Blue's Goldsmith again came up big recording five saves in the half. For the Engineers, Tamar Weseley came on in relief of Ullmann, recording one stop in the second half.

The visitors managed the only shot in the first overtime, while adding three shots in the second extra period. Goldsmith was solid once again, though, recording a pair of second OT saves to seal the tie.

Wellesley is back in action on Saturday, continuing its NEWMAC slate at WPI at 1:00pm. MIT also plays a NEWMAC contest on Saturday, traveling to Smith College for a 12:00pm game.
