Petrie Score Lifts Blue Soccer Over Smith

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- First-year Kyla Petrie scored and 85th-minute goal, as the Blue soccer team posted a 1-0 win over Smith College in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. The win keeps Wellesley's six-game unbeaten streak intact, moving the team to 9-7-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the NEWMAC. Smith, meanwhile, dips to 5-8-2 overall, 3-5-1 in conference play.

Petrie broke a scoreless tie with under five minutes to play, finishing a set-up from classmate Francesca Lapsley. Under pressure, Lapsley flicked the ball to Petrie who made a run behind and towards the goal, finishing a one-timer that hit the far post and then the back of the net.

Ahead 1-0, Wellesley goalkeeper Kat Goldsmith saved Smith's last attempt on goal, an 85th-minute shot from Allie Rooney. The Blue defense then kept the ball out of the Pioneers end to secure the victory.

Wellesley ended the contest with a 9-7 advantage in shots, while corner kicks were even at 1-1.

A slow first half featured just three total shots, all coming from the hosts. Smith keeper Alanna Lynch denied each Blue bid however, keeping the game in a 0-0 tie. Smith bounced back in the second half, however,  holding a 6-4 edge in shots, before the Wellesley score.

For the Blue, Goldsmith turned away three second half Smith attempts to secure a shut-out, her fourth of the season. For Smith, Lynch finished with five total saves.

Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday, hosting Coast Guard at 3:30pm. Smith next plays Mount Holyoke, traveling to South Hadley on Tuesday for a 6:00pm game.
