Wellesley Soccer Records 1-1 Double-OT Tie Against Coast Guard

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College and Coast Guard played to a 1-1 scoreless tie after double overtime in NEWMAC women's soccer action at Wellesley on Tuesday afternoon. The draw sets Wellesley's season mark to 9-7-3 overall, 6-1-2 in the NEWMAC, while the Bears move to 6-9-2 overall, 3-4-2 in NEWMAC play.

Both teams recorded one goal on 17 total shots in the evenly matched affair. Wellesley posted an 8-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but Coast Guard responded by out-shooting the Blue 12-5 in the second. Shots in OT were 4-3 Wellesley, while the Bears held a 4-3 overall edge in corner kicks.

The first half finished scoreless, with Wellesley's best chance coming in the 33rd minute when Francesca Lapsley's shot hit the crossbar.

After over 68 scoreless minutes, it was Wellesley that found the back of the net first. Senior Ava Mokhtari carried the ball downfield, finding first-year Kyla Petrie at the front of the box. Petrie dribbled right and dumped it off to senior LJ Foster, who beat the keeper for the 1-0 Wellesley lead.

The Blue's lead lasted just over 11 minutes, however, as Coast Guard tallied the equalizer at 79:57. On a corner kick, Alyssa Sato sent in a perfect ball that Sarah Hillis was able to one-touch over the head of the Wellesley keeper, knotting the game at 1-1.

Both teams had chances in the final 10 minutes of regulation but Wellesley keeper Kat Goldsmith and Coast Guard keeper Andrea Saldana each recorded saves to send the game into overtime.

Wellesley dominated much of the first overtime period, recording a 4-1 advantage in shots. Two Saves from Moore kept the Bears in the game, including a diving save on Mokhtari's 94th-minute bid.

Neither team managed much offense in the second overtime period. The Bears had a shot from Lindsay Duplessis go high, while the Blue had a 108th-minute corner kick, but couldn't get off a shot.

For Wellesley, Goldsmith finished with six total saves, while Saldana recorded 10 for the Bears.

Wellesley will wrap up the NEWMAC regular season on Saturday, traveling to Springfield for a 3:00pm start. Coast Guard also plays its regular season finale on Saturday, hosting MIT at 1:00pm.
