Soccer Ties Springfield 1-1 After Double Overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Wellesley College and Springfield College closed out the NEWMAC women's soccer regular season with a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field in Springfield.

The result sets Wellesley's season mark to 9-7-4, 6-1-3 in the NEWMAC, while Springfield moves to 11-4-3 overall, with an identical 6-1-3 mark in NEWMAC play.

Springfield out-shot Wellesley 10-0 in the first period, with the Blue relying on five saves from keeper
Kat Goldsmith to keep the game scoreless.

After 76 minutes of scoreless action, it was the Pride that broke through first. Brianna Messier got things going for the hosts, getting the ball at midfield and sending a pass into Nina Vital. The senior gained then control and chipped it in over the Blue keeper and into the right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Wellesley answered, just four minute later, as
Abigail Hess lofted a shot into the left side of the net, tying the game at 1-1.

After the Wellesley goal, Springfield sent two other shots at the net in regulation, but couldn't connect, sending the match into overtime.

The first overtime saw just a corner kick from Springfield, as the game remained scoreless. The Pride heated up in the second extra session, sending a barrage of shots at the Wellesley goal. The Blue's Goldsmith again came up big, recording five saves in the period to preserve the tie.

Goldsmith finished the game with 11 total saves, while Springfield's Lucy Gillett made one save for the Pride.

Both Wellesley and Springfield will now host quarterfinal games in the NEWMAC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday. The Blue have earned the #4 seed and will host #4 Babson at 1:30pm, while Springfield finishes as #3 and will host #6 WPI at 7:00pm.
