Second Half Strikes Give Blue Soccer 2-0 Win Over Bard

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- A pair of second half goals pushed the Wellesley College soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Bard College on the final day of the 2014 Soccer Without Borders Classic hosted at Wellesley.

Today's win was the second in two days for the Blue, with the team moving to 3-1 overall. The loss dips Bard to 1-2-1 on the season. Wellesley and co-host Babson College each finished the tournament with 2-0 records. Bard and Simmons were both 0-2 on the weekend.

Wellesley junior Juliette Fry broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 55th minute. First-year Melise Knowles played the ball through the defense while Fry streaked to the back side and fired a shot in to the lower left corner of the net, giving the Blue a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Kyla Petrie pushed the Wellesley advantage to 2-0 with an 87th-minute score. Sophomore Gabby Hartman assisted on the goal, playing the ball from 45 yards out over the top of the defense. Petrie met the ball at the top of the box and finished into the left side netting.

Bard had a pair of second half attempts stopped by Wellesley keeper, Claire Cerda. The senior stopped a 71st-minute shot from Emily Weisman and a 89th-minute strike from Avalon Qian to preserve her second shut out of the weekend.

Wellesley finished the game with a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Cerda got the win in goal, finishing with three total saves. In goal for Bard, Lily Harris got the start, making a pair of saves in the first half. Kelsey O'Brien played the final 45 minutes, making five stops.
