WPI Sneaks By Blue Soccer

WELLESLEY, Mass. – A penalty kick goal from WPI's Emily Doherty made all the difference as the visiting Engineers held on to take a 1-0 victory in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at the Wellesley Fields Complex. WPI moves to 6-6-2 (3-2-1) on the year following today's result. The Blue now stand at 7-7-2 and 1-5-0 in conference play.

The host Blue held a 15-8 advantage in shots and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks but were unable to beat Abbey Teliska, as the WPI sophomore went the distance in goal, making eight saves to earn her second shutout of the season.

Senior Claire Cerda and junior Kat Goldsmith each played a half in the Wellesley net. Cerda turned away one shot in the opening 45 minutes before Goldsmith made a pair of stops in the second half.

Doherty's game-winner came after a flurry of opportunities for the Blue in the opening fifteen minutes of the contest. Wellesley unleashed seven of eight first half shots and earned all three of its corner kick opportunities in an opening surge. However, Wellesley came up empty handed. With the Engineers able to withstand the opening push, Doherty beat Cerda following a Wellesley foul in the penalty area to score the game's only marker at 16:36 of the opening half.

Blue Soccer will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when Wellesley hosts Clark in a NEWMAC contest at 4:00 PM. WPI will also continue conference play on Tuesday, hosting Smith at 7:00 PM.
