Blue Squash Defeats Haverford; Drops Tight Match to Smith

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Wellesley College squash team split a pair of matches at MIT on Saturday afternoon, picking up a 7-2 victory over Haverford, while dropping a tight 5-4 match to Seven Sisters rival Smith.

Junior Cara Kaufman and first-year Alexandra Spiliakos both moved to 3-0 on the season, with two wins on Saturday. In the six spot, Spiliakos picked up a 3-0 win over Haverford's Randee Johnson and then followed it up with a 3-1 win over Smith's Jen Krain. Playing at seven, Kaufman picked up 3-1 wins over Haverford's Roxanne Jaffe and Smith's Elena Plesso.

Also picking up two wins this weekend were sophomore Sara Del Balzo and first-year Lilly Tyson. At two, Del Balzo got the first two wins of her college career by virtue of a 3-0 sweep of Haverford's Kira Jones and a 3-2 thriller against Smith's Clair Oblamski. Playing at number three, Tyson swept both Katherine Pryor of Haverford and Helen Queenan of Smith.

Also picking up wins for Wellesley were sophomores Emma Haley and Haley Vasquez and junior Margo Sulmont. At one, Haley won an exciting 3-2 match over Haverford's Caroline Nightingale, before dropping a close 3-2 match to Smith's Jacqueline Zhao. Playing at four, Sulmont was a 3-0 winner over Haverford's Alex Love, while at five, Vasquez defeated Alyssa Strayer of Haverford, 3-1.

Blue squash is back in action on Friday, hosting Tufts at 7:00pm at Dana Hall School in Wellesley.
