Blue Squash Competes at Pioneer Valley Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Wellesley College squash team competed this weeked at the 2012 Pioneer Valley Invitational, hosted by Mount Holyoke, Amherst and Smith College. Against tough competition, the Blue picked up a convincing win over #32 Haverford, before falling to #15 Amherst, #17 Franklin and Marshall and #22 Colby. 

In the Haverford match, Wellesley sophomore Rosemary O'Connor made her return to the top of the line-up, picking up a 3-0 win over Caroline Nightingale, setting the tone for the 8-1 victory. The win was O'Connors first action of the season since a left-handed win at #9 in October. Wellesley also got 3-0 wins from sophomores Emma Haley and Sara Del Balzo, competing at two and three on the ladder. 

The Blue swept the 5-6-7 matches against Haverford, as well, with first-year Lilly Tyson, junior Margo Sulmont, and sophomore Haley Vasquez each sweeping their opponents. Rounding out the match, junior Emaline Surgenor won her first match of the year at eight, after spending the fall semester abroad, while sophomore Stephanie Lee was a 3-0 winner at nine to complete the 8-1 victory. In an exhibition match, Ginny Tang was also a winner, picking up a marathon five-game win. 

Other highlights of the weekend included first-year Alexandra Spiliakos and Lee picking up wins in a 7-2 win loss to Colby. Spiliakos was a 3-1 winner in the seventh spot, while Lee swept her ninth position match. 

Wellesley squash is back in action next Saturday at the Maine Round Robin, taking on Drexel and host Bowdoin.
