Blue Squash Splits at Bowdoin's Maine Event

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Wellesley College squash team went 1-1 at the Maine Event, hosted by Bowdoin College on Saturday. The Blue topped Drexel with a 9-0 sweep before falling to the host Polar Bears, 8-1. 

The split sets Wellesley's season record to 6-10 overall.

The Blue opened the event with a sweep over Drexel, as each member of the team picked up a 3-0 victory. Rosemary O'Connor defeated Kiran Vasudevan at one, Emma Haley was a winner over Anna Schmiedicke and two, and Sara Del Balzo defeated Nur Shahrin at three. In the middle of the lineup, Lilly Tyson was a winner over Claire Anderson, Margo Sulmont defeated Courtney Sabo and Haley Vasquez defeated Lauren Shoppet. 

Rounding out the Drexel match, Alexandra Spiliakos defeated Zeba Ahmed at seven and Emaline Surgenor was a winner over Alyssa Marcino at eight. Cara Kaufman completed the sweep with a win at nine, while Stephanie Lee won her exhibition match at ten.

Against Bowdoin, Wellesley fought hard, but came up short, dropping the 8-1 contest to the Polar Bears. Kaufman picked up the lone win for Wellesley, defeating Emily Simonton 3-0 at number nine. At one, O'Connor battled back from 0-2 to tie the match, before coming up short in the final game against Torey Lee. Tyson also lost a hard-fought match at four, taking a game from Alden Drake.  

Wellesley squash is back in action tomorrow at the Smith Invitational, taking on Vassar and William Smith.
