Wellesley Squash Sweeps Competition at Smith Invite

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College squash team went a perfect 2-0 competing at the Smith Invitational on Sunday. The Blue posted a commanding 9-0 victory over Vassar, while defeating William Smith, 6-3. 

The wins improve Wellesley's season record to 8-10, as the Blue have now won three out of their last four matches.

Against William Smith, Wellesley used stong play from the top half of the ladder to come away with the 6-3 win. The Blue won the first six flights, headed by 3-0 wins from sophomores Rosemary O'Connor at one, Emma Haley at two and Sara Del Balzo at three. At four and six, first-year Lilly Tyson and sophomore Haley Vasquez each picked up 3-0 wins, sandwiching a marathon 3-2 win from junior Margo Sulmont at five. 

In the sweep over Vassar, Wellesley surrendered just three games en route to the commanding victory. O'Connor, Haley and Del Balzo each added their second wins of the day at one, two and three. Tyson, Sulmont and Vasquez, also won their four, five and six matches, to move to 2-0 on the day.

At seven, first-year Alexandra Spiliakos came out on top with a 3-1 victory, while at eight, junior Emaline Surgenor swept her opponent, 3-0. Rounding out the victory, junior Cara Kaufman got a 3-0 victory in the ninth spot. 

Wellesley Squash will next head to the 2012 Seven Sisters Championships, hosted by Vassar College. The Blue will battle Vassar, Smith and Mount Holyoke at the event.
