Blue Squash Downs Boston College

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College squash team ended their 2012 home schedule with a convincing 7-2 victory over Boston College at Dana Hall School in Wellesley. The win evens the Blue's season record to 11-11, marking the most wins for the team since the 2002-2003 season.

Wellesley opened with a sweep of the first round matches to take an early 3-0 advantage. At seven, junior Emaline Surgenor made quick work of her opponent, taking the 11-2, 11-3, 11-5 victory. In the sixth flight match, first-year Alexandra Spiliakos won 11-6, 11-9, 11-8, while at three, classmate Lilly Tyson won a four-game match, 11-8, 9-11, 11-4, 11-4.

The Blue went up 4-0 with a win from sophomore Sara Del Balzo at two, 11-9, 11-2, 11-7. Boston College got one back in the eighth spot, where Wellesley's Stephanie Lee battled back from 0-2 before narrowing falling 11-9 in the fifth game. The Blue then clinched the match with a thrilling come-from-behind victory from junior Margo Sulmont playing in the fifth spot. Sulmont fell behind 0-2 and was down 9-4 in the third game before taking control and winning game three 12-10. She then pulled out close 11-9 and 11-7 victories in games four and five to earn the match-clinching point for Wellesley. 

With the match already in hand, Wellesley tacked on two more team points with wins from sophomore Emma Haley at one, and sophomore Haley Vasquez at four. Haley was an 11-4, 11-8, 11-8 winner, while Vasquez pulled out a hard-fought 11-6, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10 victory. In the eighth spot, junior Cara Kaufman dropped a tough three-game match, including an ultra-close 14-12 third game. 

Wellesley squash is back in action tomorrow at 11:00am taking on #11 Middlebury at MIT.
