Squash Wraps Up CSA Championships; Blue Top Conn.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wellesley College squash team ended the 2011-12 season by topping Connecticut College, 8-1, to move up a spot in the final College Squash Association (CSA) team rankings.

The Blue end their campaign with a 12-15 dual meet record and a #23 national ranking in the CSA. Wellesley's win total is the most for the team since the 2002-03 season.

Competing in the Walker Cup "C" Division at the three-day CSA Team Championships, the Blue opened the tournament with 9-0 losses to the #1 ranked team in the bracket, Bowdoin, and to the #4 team, Colby.

Against Bowdoin, Blue athletes forced several games to extra points, but ultimately fell to the Polar Bears.

Against Colby, Wellesley's Emma Haley, Haley Vasquez and Emaline Surgenor each took a game from their opponents.

Wrapping up the tournament, the Blue topped Conn., who was ranked #22 going into the event. Wellesley completely turned the tables on the Camels, avenging an earlier 8-1 loss to Conn., back in December.

At one, Rosemary O'Connor was a 3-2 winner over Laura Abrams, while Haley also pulled out a 3-2 victory at two. Sara Del Balzo picked up a 3-1 win at three, while Lilly Tyson pulled out another five game thriller with a 3-2 win at four.

In the five, six and seven spots, Wellesley picked up three wins in straight games, with Vasquez, Margo Sulmont and Alexandra Spiliakos each notching 3-0 victories. Wrapping up the team win, Cara Kaufman was a 3-0 winner in the ninth position, while Stephanie Lee won an exhibition at 10.

Wellesley will now await selections to the CSA Individual Championships, held next weekend at Amherst College.
