Squash Tops William Smith to Go 1-1 at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wellesley College squash team went 1-1 at the Wesleyan Round Robin on Saturday, picking up a win against William Smith and a loss against host Wesleyan. The Blue are now 2-7 overall.

Wellesley opened the day with a 9-0 loss to Wesleyan, before rebounding with a win over William Smith. In the match against the Herons, Wellesley came away with a thrilling 5-4 victory, powered by wins at three, four and five, and then seven and eight.

Wellesley senior Margo Sulmont rebounded from a first-game loss to win her match in four. She topped William Smith's Olivia Beckwith 5-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-5 in the third flight. At four, junior Haley Vasquez also used a come-from-behind victory to take her match. Falling behind, 2-1, she won the final two games against Courtney Leous to seal the 11-9, 4-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-3 victory.

At five, first-year Gabriella Wynne had little trouble with Anne Habecker, posting an 11-4, 11-5, 14-12 victory. Senior Cara Kaufman was a five-game winner in her match at seven, topping Molly Doran 4-11,13-11,7-11,11-9,11-8. Wrapping up the Wellesley winners, sophomore Alexandra Spiliakos was an 11-2, 12-10, 11-13, 11-9 winner over Nellie Lindecke.

In losses for the Blue, senior Emaline Surgenor and first-year Kate Loftus each played their matches to more than three games. Surgenor narrowly lost her match, coming up short against Justine Shark, 7-11,9-11,11-9,11-6,12-10, at six. Loftus forced four games in her match against Casey Erin, winning the second game, 12-10.

Wellesley squash is now idle until 2013. The Blue will be back in action on January 18th and 19th, traveling to Amherst and Mount Holyoke to take part in the Pioneer Valley Invitational.
