Squash Competes at Bowdoin's "Maine Event"

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Wellesley College squash team competed at Bowdoin College's home tournament, "The Maine Event," on Saturday in Brunswick. The Blue went 0-2, playing the hosts and Colby College.

The losses dip Wellesley's season record to 3-12 overall.

Wellesley dropped an 8-1 match against Bowdoin to open the tournament. The Blue got a win from first-year Kate Loftus, playing at nine, while junior Stephanie Lee won her exhibition match at 10. Loftus topped Natalie LaPlante in three games, with scores of 11-3, 11-7 and 11-7. Lee defeated Lila Wright, 11-6, 11-1, 11-3.

Also against Bowdoin, senior Emaline Surgenor's seventh flight match was tightly played in all three games. The Polar Bears' Gretchen Williams came out on top, but needed extra points in games one and two to nab the 14-12, 12-10, 11-7 win.

In the second match of the afternoon, Wellesley fell 9-0 to Colby. The match was closer than the final score indicated, with five of the 10 matches going past three games. 

Loftus played the tightest with Colby, dropping a close 8-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-2, 11-5 match, while seniors Margo Sulmont and Cara Kaufman, junior Haley Vasquez and sophomore Alexandra Spiliakos each took their matches to four. 

Wellesley squash is back in action on Thursday, January 31st, hosting Boston College in a 7:00pm match at Dana Hall School in Wellesley.
