Squash Celebrates Senior Day with Sweep of Tufts

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College squash team avenged another early season loss tonight, this time posting a 9-0 sweep over Tufts University at Dana Hall School. Tufts won the November meeting between the two teams, 5-4, at the MIT Round Robin.

The win lifts the #26 Blue to 7-13, while the #25 Jumbos fall to 3-11 overall. Wellesley has now won four out of its last five matches. 

Wellesley dominated the match, allowing Tufts to win just three total games. Blue seniors Margo Sulmont, Emaline Surgenor, and Cara Kaufman led the way, making the most of their final home match by sweeping their respective opponents. Sulmont was a 11-6, 10-12, 11-5, 11-8 winner at five, Surgenor allowed just four opponent points in a 11-1, 11-2, 11-1 win at seven, while Kaufman was equally as effective with a 11-3, 11-1, 11-1 win at eight.

At the top of the line-up, junior Rosemary O'Connor posted a thrilling 3-2 win in the top spot, pulling out a marathon 7-11, 12-10, 7-11, 16-14, 11-7 win. At two and three, first-year Gabriella Wynne and junior Sara Del Balzo were each 3-0 winners, as Wynne won 11-7, 11-3, 13-11, at two, and Del Balzo was a 11-6, 11-1, 11-1 winner at four.

At four, six and seven, sophomore Lilly Tyson, junior Haley Vasquez, and sophomore Alexandra Spiliakos all swept their opponents. Tyson won 11-2, 11-2, 12-10, at four, Vasquez won 11-4, 11-3, 11-2, at six, and Spiliakos won 11-8, 11-7, 11-2 at seven.

Closing out the sweep, first-year Kate Loftus won her exhibition match at 10, 11-4, 11-2, 11-2, while rookies Mollee Jain and Charlotte Benishek also recorded exhibition wins.

Up next for the Blue, O'Connor, Wynne, and Sulmont will represent Wellesley at the first-ever Division III Individual Championships. The event will run Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bowdoin College.

Following the Division III Individuals, the team will travel to battle Northeastern on Tuesday, February 12th, in their final tune up before the Howe Cup Team Championships.
