Wellesley Squash Wins Big to Open 2013-14 Season

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College squash team opened the 2013-14 season with a convincing 8-1 victory at Northeastern University on Friday night. The match was the first of the season for both squads.

Wellesley won in the second through ninth positions, also recording wins in all four exhibition matches. Overall, the Blue picked up 11 three-set victories on the night.

Five of Wellesley's nine spots in the line-up featured first-years picking up their first collegiate squash victories, all coming in 3-0 sweeps. Meera Nayar earned her victory at three, allowing just 10 opponent points, while at five, Kelsey Burhans gave up just six points in her victory.

At six, Rhea Advani also gave up just six points, winning her match, 3-0, while at eight, Navisha Gupta surrendered only three total points in her win. Rounding out the first-years, Ruby Feng was nearly flawless at nine, allowing just one opponent point in her victory.

In addition to the success of the first-year players, another newcomer to collegiate squash earned her first victory. Junior Sarah Tammaro picked up a three-set victory, allowing just two opponent points, playing number 12 in her collegiate debut.

Wellesley's veterans backed up the play of the newcomers. At two, senior Sara Del Balzo picked up a four-game win, while at four, sophomore Gabriella Wynne was a 3-0 winner. In the seventh spot, senior Haley Vasquez surrendered just three total points in her victory.

Wrapping up the action for the Blue, sophomore Kate Loftus won a pair of exhibition matches, while classmate Mollee Jain also won her exhibition match. Wellesley's only loss came at number one, where senior Rosemary O'Connor fell in four close games. 

Wellesley squash is back in action tomorrow morning at 10:00am, taking on Boston College at MIT.
