Blue Squash Goes 2-1 on Opening Day of Season

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Wellesley College squash rebounded from an opening defeat to the University of Virginia, defeating local rivals Mount Holyoke and Smith to open their 2014-15 schedule on Saturday in round robin play at Harvard University's Murr Center.

Wellesley 1, Virgina 8

The Cavaliers scored an 8-1 victory in the opening match of the day as first year Phyllis Lin was the only Wellesley player able to earn a victory. Lin defeated Virginia's Celia Dyer in five (7-11, 11-5, 11-3, 9-11, 11-7), rallying to win at number two after dropping the first game. 

For the Blue, Navisha Gupta was the only other player to win a game versus Virginia. Gupta took game three 11-2 after dropping the first two, 11-6 and 11-5, to Virginia's Amanda Whelan. Whelan would then take the fourth game, 11-2, to earn the win at number five. 

Wellesley 7, Mount Holyoke 2

The Blue won positions one through three and four through seven en route to a 7-2 victory over Mount Holyoke. First year Sarah Zhang and Lin both took four game victories at number one and two while sophomore Rhea Advani defeatd Xianger Fei, also 3-1, in the number three position. 

Gupta defeated Mount Holyoke's Allison Schilling, 3-2, at number five before Ruby Feng locked up the Blue's first victory of the season by taking the number six spot with her own 3-2 victory. Sarah Tammaro also recorded a victory in the 7-2 Blue triumph.

Wellesley 9, Smith 0

The Blue capped the day with a 9-0 sweep of Smith in the final match-up of the afternoon. Wellesley took second through ninth, all by 3-0 margins, while Zhang withstood a test from Smith Jacqueline Zhou to take a 3-1 victory at number one.

Lin gabbed her third victory of the day while Gabriella Wynne and Harshita Yerramreddy each grabbed their first of the season. For Yerramreddy, the victory was also the first of her collegiate career. 

Wellesley Squash will return to action on Friday when they host Boston College at 7:00 PM at the Dana Hall School.
