Blue Squash Drops 7-2 Decision To St. Lawrence To Open 2016

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College squash opened the second half of the season on Sunday evening, dropping a 7-2 decision to visiting Saint Lawrence University at the Dana Hall School's Shipley Center.

Wellesley, ranked a program-best 21st in the College Squash Association, is now 4-4. The 23rd ranked Saints improve to 2-7 while snapping a six-match skid.

The Blue scored victories in the number four and number six match-ups and dropped a pair of tight decisions at number seven and number nine.

Junior Meera Nayar (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) opened by taking the first two games at number four, 11-6, 11-7, before St. Lawrence first year Elizabeth Lasusa (New York, N.Y.) grabbed the third game, 12-10. However, Nayar came back strong in the fourth game to capture the match thanks to an 11-3 final.

At number six, newcomer Haley Connor earned a 3-0 victory in her first match in Blue. The sophomore swept to an impressive 11-2, 11-1, 11-7 win over St. Lawrence sophomore Cristina de la Vega (Greenwich, Conn.).

In two close setbacks, junior Ruby Feng (Old Lyme, Conn.) battled to a four-game defeat at number seven to Losangela Batista (Boston, Mass.), 11-5, 11-13, 11-6, 12-10. At number nine, Wellesley's Navisha Gupta (Mumbai, India) fell to Valeria Quan (Antiguo Cuscatlan, San Salvador) in a back-and-forth five game match, 10-12, 11-6, 6-11, 11-9, 11-5. The Saints swept the remaining matches by 3-0 scores to capture the match, 7-2.

Wellesley returns to the courts this Wednesday, January 20, for a midweek match at No. 28 Connecticut College.
