Squash Sweeps By Northeastern To Win Fifth Straight

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College squash swept to a 9-0 victory over Northeastern University on Saturday afternoon at the Dana Hall School's Shipley Center.

Wellesley, ranked 22nd in the College Squash Association, improves to 9-4 on the year with their fifth straight victory. The streak matches the squad's longest winning streak from the 2014-15 season. No. 42 Northeastern is now 0-6 on the season. 

Wellesley sophomore Sarah Zhang (Lexington, Mass.) faced the toughest test of the afternoon, but she held firm to defeat Nicole Powers, 11-7, 11-4, 11-3, at number one. The rest of the ladder was a similar story for the Blue, as all nine players won thanks to 3-0 sweeps.

Sophomore Phyllis Lin (Acton, Mass.) took down Alexandra Berg (NU) 11-8, 11-2, 11-5 at number two, while junior Meera Nayar (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) bested Melissa Gwon, 11-4, 11-4, 11-1, at number three. At number four, senior Gabriella Wynne (Brookline, Mass.) defeated Elena Roffel, 11-1, 11-1, 11-1.

Wellesley continued to roll, as sophomore Haley Connor (Boston, Mass.) defeated Malia Bow, 11-1, 11-1, 11-2, at number five and senior Kate Loftus (Portland, Ore.) ran past Asel Primbetova 11-2, 11-0, 11-2 at six.

The final three matches were no different between the Blue and the Huskies, with Navisha Gupta (Mumbai, India) defeating Khloe Lewis 11-2, 11-1, 11-1, at number seven, Ruby Feng (Old Lyme, Conn.) downing Emma Winget, 11-3, 11-0, 11-4, at eight and Meredith Curry (Medfield, Mass.) capping the sweep with an 11-4, 11-4, 11-0, win over Felicia Simmons at nine.

Wellesley squash will now focus on defending the Blue's Seven Sisters Championship next Saturday, February 6. Vassar will host the annual tournament that also features Smith and Mount Holyoke. For more, visit this year's tournament webpage.
